BELINDA TEH
I completed my Bachelor of Laws in 2016, and was convinced that being a lawyer wasn’t for me.
I was planning to teach English abroad when my mother was suddenly diagnosed with terminal cancer. Over the next few years, I observed how assisted dying legislation was operating in other jurisdictions around the world, then walked from Melbourne to Perth from May to August 2019 hosting community forums about the WA Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill.
Following this, I engaged with politicians, health care providers and lobby groups to encourage public debate, and advocated for end-of-life law reform on platforms including Insight SBS, Network Ten’s The Project and a TED Talk. As public support grew, I was invited to speak about negative impacts of the existing laws at events hosted by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, the WA State Library and a CPD Seminar at UWA Law School. I appeared frequently in media such as The Australian, Today Perth and Sky News and learned how to explain complex legal concepts in a way that was accessible to everyday people.
After a unified community effort, the Bill passed and in 2020 I was nominated for Young Australian of the Year for my contribution to the campaign.
Following this, I joined Croftbridge as a clerk, and was admitted in 2023. I currently spend my time assisting the team primarily in civil litigation and administrative law matters.
When I’m not at work, you will find me on my yoga mat or exploring the Perth Hills.
